Mitigation
By: Shawn d. Petrie (6-21-1996)
Relief from a life
That’s endlessly black
No rest for this heart
In a story about love
The time will come
Relieve me of this work
Hold open the cell door
As I flee once and for all
Too many tear drops
Have fallen from my eyes
Time to relax
And try to forget the past
The greatest relief
Is now what I face
With a standing ovation
As I enter this heavenly place
My soul will cry out
As I break the locked chains
The laws of my father
Are overwritten in this land
The problems I had
When I was a mortal before
Now see so trivial
Now seen so small
Hidden in a pocket
For safe keeping
As I slowly lost hope
That this day would never come
This relief will change me
Will change my venomous life
I will no longer view it
As a loaded knife
With this mitigation I face
I can tell you it will be worth it
Because there is nothing more relieving
Than relief
